Quote by Paul Collins on a black and white image of the ocean and mountains

"...perhaps the most restrictive virtual straitjacket that educators face is behaviorism — a psychological theory that would have us focus exclusively on what can be seen and measured, that ignores or dismisses inner experience and reduces wholes to parts. It also suggests that everything people do can be explained as a quest for reinforcement — and, by implication, that we can control others by rewarding them selectively." (Behaviorism, n.d.).

POTENTIAL HARMS OF BEHAVIOURISM

Why can it be harmful?

It's crucial to understand that not all approaches within behaviourism are inherently harmful. Nevertheless, most behavioural techniques (especially if misapplied) have the potential to cause distress or harm, specifically to autistic or neurodivergent individuals. For some children (regardless of neurotype), certain aspects of behaviourism, such as "positive reinforcement", can be helpful, although these methods are not without harms. It is dependant upon how these techniques are used, in what capacity, and if they are used to manipulate behaviour. Generally, many behavioural techniques work, but we need to ask "at what cost?"

Furthermore, it's crucial to acknowledge that behaviourism represents just one psychological theory among many, and there are numerous other psychological theories and aspects of child development that must be taken into account when engaging with (neurodivergent/disabled) children and individuals. Humans are intricate beings with distinct and personalized requirements, and their holistic development and individuality should be carefully considered when addressing behaviour and other needs. We need to take aspects such as trauma, emotions, individual thoughts and ideas, autonomy, and many other "unobservable" factors into consideration when working with human beings.

Below, I've outlined some of the potential negative consequences along with related research findings about the issues within behaviourism.
